About Hirakud Dam
Hirakud Dam, located in the Indian state of Odisha, is one of the world’s longest earthen dams, spanning the Mahanadi River. Built in 1957, it was a pioneering engineering marvel and a symbol of India’s post-independence industrialization. The dam serves a vital role in controlling the Mahanadi’s waters, mitigating floods, and providing irrigation to millions of acres of farmland. It also generates hydroelectric power, contributing significantly to the region’s energy needs.
Surrounded by scenic landscapes and offering boating opportunities on the Hirakud Reservoir, the dam has become a popular tourist destination, blending utility with natural beauty and showcasing India’s prowess in water resource management.
